Mob of 50 Swarms Nordstrom – Bear Sprays Security Guards – $100k Stolen

This story is just ridiculous.

30-50 people in an organized group entered a Los Angeles Nordstrom.

Using bear spray to incapacitate the security staff.

Before making off with $60k to $100k in merchandise.

This is a growing trend among large retailers.

Thieves are stealing vast amounts of merchandise.

And getting away with it too.

NBC News has more on the story:

LOS ANGELES — Armed with bear spray, a group of up to 50 people swarmed a Los Angeles mall Saturday and made away with around $100,000 worth of luxury items, officials said.

Thirty to 50 people descended on the Nordstrom store at the Westfield Topanga Mall in Woodland Hills, using the bear spray to neutralize security guards as they made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of luxury handbags and high-end clothing, a police spokesman said.

The call of “numerous persons shoplifting” came shortly after 4 p.m., the LAPD said. Police estimated the loss at $60,000 to $100,000.

“Topanga Division officers were on the scene quickly and have several investigative leads,” the LAPD said in a statement.

There was no immediate word of arrests, and the robbers fled in a BMW and other vehicles.

I recently worked in security at a large retail store.

And I can say personally.

Theft is becoming rampant.

And the crazy thing is that most security can’t lay their hands on these thieves.

Want to know why?

Because of racial discrimination lawsuits.

These large companies are afraid of being sued for wrongly accusing individuals of theft.

So now they think taking the loss from theft is more economical.

Then to risk a lawsuit.

How insane is that?

Let’s turn to the folks at NPR for more information:

Another “flash mob” robbery took place in Los Angeles County just days before, at the Yves Saint Laurent store in Glendale on Aug. 8. The Glendale Police Department said in a statement last week that at least 30 suspects rushed into the store just before 5 p.m. and stole property valued at approximately $300,000.

“These ‘flash mob’ burglaries involve a large, coordinated group of individuals simultaneously rushing into the store, overwhelming staff and taking it over,” Glendale Police said. “The suspects grab as much merchandise as possible before fleeing in multiple vehicles.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called Saturday’s incident “absolutely unacceptable.”

“Those who committed these acts and acts like it in neighboring areas must be held accountable. The Los Angeles Police Department will continue to work to not only find those responsible for this incident but to prevent these attacks on retailers from happening in the future.”

Saturday’s robbery was the third Nordstrom heist in California in less than two years.

This next guy hits the nail on the head:

Aside from lawsuits.

This is another big reason.

Many states and cities are passing laws that are increasing the amount that someone has to steal before being prosecuted.

So why not steal $500 worth of merchandise if you know nothing will come of it?

If these people CAN steal something, they WILL.

What we don’t need is more lax laws on theft.

We need to crack down on theft.

Serve harsher sentences and lower the amount before it becomes grand larceny.
