WATCH: Democrat Representative Calls for Biden To Be Replaced

Democrat Rep. Dean Phillips of Minnesota has called for Biden to be challenged in the 2024 Democratic primary.

Phillips in an interview with CNN said that most Democratic are not happy having Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate in 2024.

He continued “It’s not about me. This is about a message and a wake-up call that I am trying my darnedest to deliver to Democrats, 55% of whom, before today’s news, wanted an alternative to the three candidates in the primary now.”

Phillips’s comments came around the same time a special counsel was appointed to investigate Hunter Biden.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) reiterated his calls for President Joe Biden to be challenged in the Democratic primary for the 2024 presidential election after a special counsel was appointed to investigate the president’s son, Hunter.

Phillips echoed his calls from over the weekend that most Democrats and independents are not satisfied with the current options in the Democratic presidential primary. He warned that the unpopularity of the current candidates could hurt Democrats’ chances of maintaining the White House. His comments came while speaking on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper on Friday.

“It’s not about me. This is about a message and a wake-up call that I am trying my darnedest to deliver to Democrats, 55% of whom, before today’s news, wanted an alternative to the three candidates in the primary now, and I’ve said that from the very beginning, I’ve had concerns. The numbers are horrific — the polling numbers: 55% of Democrats wanting an alternative, independents about 73% want an alternative, and let me just assume that 100% moderate Republican never-Trumpers are saying we want an alternative, we will not vote for the sitting president,” Phillips said.

The Minnesota Democrat also expressed how his calls for Biden to be challenged are not because of any disdain for the president, and he added that he loves Biden and thinks he has a great record but is rather sounding the alarm on polling numbers among all groups.

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) said Friday he wants President Biden to welcome competition in the 2024 Democratic presidential primary.

Phillips told Axios he is still considering mounting his own intra-party challenge to Biden if nobody else gets in the race.

Phillips said in a CNN interview that Biden should “actually invite people to the primary stage” to promote competition.

“Not me,” he said. “I think I’m able and prepared for the job, but I’m a third-term congressman, I have 60,000 Twitter followers and $250,000 in my campaign account. There are people ready to go.”
