Disgraced Former U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Doctor, Convicted Child Sex Offender Reportedly Stabbed Multiple Times in Prison

Larry Nassar, the disgraced former U.S. women’s gymnastics and Michigan State University sports doctor, was reportedly stabbed multiple times at a federal prison in Florida.

Nassar admitted to sexually assaulting underage girls while working as the team doctor for the U.S. women’s gymnastics program and Michigan State gymnastics team.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

Nassar was sentenced to 60 years in federal prison in 2017, after pleading guilty to child pornography and tampering with evidence charges.

After pleading guilty to seven counts of sexual assault in Ingham County, Michigan, Nassar received an additional 40 to 175 years in Michigan State prison.

The convicted child molester is scheduled be transferred to a Michigan state prison when he is released from federal custody.

According to The Associated Press, Nassar was stabbed multiple times during an altercation with another inmate.

Two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press the attack happened Sunday at United States Penitentiary Coleman. The people said he was in stable condition Monday.

One of the people said Nassar had been stabbed in the back and in the chest. The prison was experiencing staffing shortages and the two officers assigned to the unit where Nassar was held were working mandated overtime shifts, one of the people said.

The people were not authorized to publicly discuss details of the attack or the ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity.

Nassar is serving decades in prison for convictions in state and federal courts. He admitted sexually assaulting athletes when he worked at Michigan State University and at Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics, which trains Olympians. Separately, Nassar pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

Yahoo Sports added:

Nassar, 59, has been in prison since 2017 after pleading guilty to sexually abusing underage girls while serving as the team doctor at USA Gymnastics and for the Michigan State gymnastics team. More than 250 women have come forward to accuse Nassar of sexually abusing them, including Olympic gold medalists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber and Madison Kocian.

During Nassar’s sentencing, 150 women made victim impact statements over the course of four days in Judge Rosemarie Aquilina’s courtroom. They described how Nassar used his position of power to befriend them and earn their trust, then abuse them under the guise of medical treatment to convince them of the legitimacy of his actions. Judge Aquilina sentenced him to 40 to 175 years in prison.

Nassar is also serving a 60-year federal prison sentence for possessing 37,000 images of child pornography and attempting to destroy those images. He was additionally convicted of sexual abuse in Michigan and sentenced to 40 to 125 years in prison.

While Nassar’s sexual abuse prison sentences will be served concurrently, he will not serve any of that prison time until he completes his 60-year federal sentence for child pornography. His earliest possible release date would not come until he’s 104 years old, 27 years past the average male life expectancy in the United States.
