WATCH: Officers Act Quickly as Suspect Attempts to Stab Police K-9

There seems to be a real lack of respect for police in America today.

That lack of respect apparently extends to police dogs as well.

A man in Jacksonville, Florida was allegedly holding his girlfriend hostage with a knife before a long standoff with police ensued.

After several hours of negotiating, the suspect attempted to escape by running away.

With police and SWAT in pursuit, the man eventually turned his rage towards a police K-9 assigned to the situation.

Fortunately, law enforcement acted quickly before the man could stab the dog.

Shots rang out and the man fell to the ground mere moments before he could attack.

The suspect was pronounced dead on the scene.

The New York Post provided details on the incident:

Deputies were called to a Jacksonville home on April 12 after receiving reports that Matvey Klimenko was holding his ex-girlfriend hostage at knifepoint, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Post, the suspect attempted to run away after releasing his hostage.

As officers closed in, the suspect then attempted to stab a police dog:

Klimenko can be seen holding a knife as the dog closes in while several deputies scream at him to drop his weapon.

“Don’t let him stab him!” an officer can be heard screaming on bodycam video. “Don’t let him stab him!”

With Klimenko poised to bring the blade down on the animal, several shots ring out and he falls to the ground.

He was later pronounced dead.

Thank God that officers responded so quickly.
